Brand Reviews

Writer's picture: Simone WilliamsSimone Williams

This is the start of the trail of chaotic ramblings... where I give you my perspective and review on brands. So to give you an overview on what to expect out of my reviews. Remember, these are my opinions. You don't have to agree with them.

If there’s one thing I can’t resist, it’s adding more paints to my collection. Honestly, I probably have enough to last several lifetimes (or at least until someone invents a paint that can defy time). But let’s be real—each paint has its own personality. It’s not just about how pretty they look when they’re swirled in water or swept across paper. There’s a whole world of unique qualities that make each brand and each pigment special. It’s in the granulation, the way colors layer like whispers, or how a single brushstroke can feel like magic. Maybe it’s the history behind the brand or something as unique as its geopolitical story—because, yes, art supplies have their own little quirks and tales to tell. I created a blog category about the history of these as well. Personally, I dream of collecting at least one paint from every country someday.

Now, as part of this wild adventure, I’ll be diving deep into the world of watercolors, reviewing brands and paints to give you the scoop. Each review will break things down into key categories so you know exactly what to expect.

Here’s how I’ll be judging:

  • Brand Overview: Who they are, what they stand for, and the vibes they give.

  • Customer Service: How they handle complaints, inquiries, or issues (if any).

  • Delivery: How it arrives. Does it survive the post office "challenge" unscathed?

  • Packaging: Sure, it’s not the biggest deal, but it says a lot about a brand.

  • The Paint: The real star of the show!

    • How does it wet?

    • How does it bloom?

    • Is it easy to work with?

    • Does it have special quirks or qualities?

    • How does it feel overall?

    • Pigment load?

To make things even better, each review will include:

  • Images: Swatches and close-ups of the paint in action.

  • Videos: Watch how it behaves in real time—blooms, spreads, and layers galore!

  • Artwork: A completed painting made with each watercolor brand so you can see its true potential.

I will be taking my brand out of it. I am looking for someone to review it for me though. Being honest and completely unabashed. Who will it be?

I’ll try to keep some consistency with materials (likely Canson paper and a Black Velvet brush), but hey, art is messy and ever-evolving. I’ll list all the materials used and link to the swatches for reference.

I hope this guide inspires you to dive deeper into the world of watercolors—or maybe just to find your next favorite brand. Let’s explore together and have fun with it, because what’s better than discovering the unexpected beauty in a well-loved palette?

Stay tuned, and happy painting!
